Quick walk around

Nothing really to report from the plot this week not had chance to go and play, only went yesterday to take some bits for the compost. I did take juke with me so he could have a walk around, once at the plot I'd wish I'd come by myself not being mean. It was a nice day to do some odd jobs while it was nice weather, but thought I'd treat juke to a walk instead. While walking around the site I'd noticed a few damaged poly tunnels and greenhouses, all down to the wind over the last few days. The last bit of wind we had I  was ok but this time it got me,well i say it got me it got my fence this time. It needed sorting anyway so it's done me a favour I think, well it has if I have enough wood if not it's going back up.

Anybody got a clue what these are, been told it has a nice flower but you can eat the tuber. Been told it's a veg and the tuber taste nutty, had a taste but it's bland Keith's been growing them for a few years.

Little done

As like every week that goes past I only have chance to do a little on the plot, either the weathers bad or just can't get time to get on down. Most of the time it's getting time to get on down to the plot, this weekend a I spent 2 hours Friday and 3 hour Saturday on the plot. I decided I would dig a little even though my mind said nahhhhh just leave it, I dug a section over which was about 8ft x 24ft ish,I normally give up and do other stuff. But this time in stuck to it and got a bit done and was chuffed,i was going to leave it till next year but I caved in and dig some. This is the first year I've really got stuck into digging for some reason, don't know why because it's on the bottom of the list of jobs to do.

Other news I picked a few things to take home for tea this week, just some beetroot / leeks / red cabbages. Well that what i have left growing in at the moment, might pickle the beets to make them last. Leeks will get used up but the cabbages will end up on the compost or gave away, still have some swedes left to pick and that's it. I got given a parsnip from Keith on the next plot,it's massive and will take all week to eat it. I've took a photo of it and put an egg next to it to show the size if it,think I'll grow some next year I think and try and grow some big ones.

Not much to report.

Another week has gone and still nothing done apart from putting the bath in the tunnel,it did fit ok just have to sort shelf out and connect the guttering. The guttering is up on both sides ones going into the bath outside, and the other going  to nothing until we connect it to the inside. We have to change the flow first and get some joints for the corners, or we might just make something that will do the job.

Another bath

I've managed to pick up another bath for the allotment,I did see it yesterday and picked it up today. What I'm going to do is use it inside be Polytunnel, going fill it with water and it will stay the same temp inside the tunnel. That way it won't shock the plants inside the tunnel,so it should be good free investment.

Still have time

Still find time to put feet up and have a cuppa.

Not much left to pick.

With the greenhouse and Poly tunnel getting sorted for next year,I have picked my last toms and cucumber from them both. Still got a few beets / swedes  and leeks left to pick, but that's it for 2013 for the plot no more veg ti next year. I'm happy what I've grown and eaten from plot 42,I've ordered a few seeds for next year and some new seeds to try still
Ordered way to many seeds.

I got given a pumpkin by Keith that he wasn't going to eat,so I made some soup from it for the first time. It wasn't that bad but a bit plain but it was an easy soup to make,1kg pumpkin + couple of onions and 700ml of stock all cooked down then put in blender. I'll do it again so I  will have to grow some next year,I had the soup with some  homemade bread cakes the daughter had made.

This year I've saved some seeds and some spuds for next year,it's the first time I've saved anything to try and grow again. If it doesn't work I've ordered them anyway, the seeds are drying nicely just had to sort the spuds out. So what I've done is wrapped the spuds in newspaper and put into them into tubs, then wrapped them in bubble wrap and put away. I will check on them time to time to see if all of them are ok,even the mice loved the spuds while I was drying them.

Garlic planted

I made it to the plot for an hour in between the rain to plants my garlic, I planted Elephant Garlic and Picardy Wight Garlic for the first time. All the garlic was from www.vegetableseeds.netso hoping I have a better year than last, think last year the garlic hit water logged and rotted. This year I will cover the garlic over If I know it's going to rain, then just remove the covers once the rain has stopped. I planted 24 small garlic and 4 elephant garlic, also planted a few small ones in pots.  I dug over the soils and put some manure in and compost, then planted the garlic and covered with leaf mould fingers crossed it works.

But more dug over

Only time to get to the allotment was a few hours on Friday, nobody else was around with it being cold and wet. So I finished throwing the rotten down manure over the plot, then transferred my compost into a new bay to give it a good turning. Top half needed to rot  down  a bit more, but bottom half was already rotted down and looked quite good. So hoping with me turning it over the rest will rot down nicely for next year. In the Polytunnel I got around to dig it over again and fill it with manure and lead mould,it's looking better now but still needs digging again just to break it up a bit more.
