Used a bit of bark

I decided to clear the area around the greenhouse and shed of weeds, then I put some sheeting down then followed by some bark. The area I cleared was a a bit over grown with weeds and rubbish, also the section I have my compost bins and storage. I didn't realise how much bark I needed to cover the area, I was a bit of a walk to collect the bark and then walk back. When I got home from moving all that bark I couldn't move because I was that tired, but I was chuffed i got it all done on Friday when I left work.

Bagged a few onions up for storage last week and finished sorting the last lot at the allotment, the ones left are just finishing drying before I store them. Sunflowers are doing ok and getting bigger, also I have about 13 more strawberry plants taking root and ready to plant later on.

Bit more on the path.

Ive Been busy at work last week and also been away for a for a few days so not done a lot at the plot, before I went away I did a bit more on the path and done over half way now then i ran out of timber.I will have to rummage around for some more or go on the borrow, but will find away of finishing it.Once the path sorted then I will crack on with everything else,we'll I say that now and still be doing the path next year.

Few bugs

Few bugs at the allotment over the last couple of days.

Sorting path out

Had a good few hour at the allotment over the weekend well more on Saturday than Sunday, I know I may of talked a bit on saturday more than normal. What I had planned was to sort out a path along the fence so I didn't have to weed it,most of the time I just ended up cutting down then letting it grow back again. So I started at one end and chopped some of the weeds down, then made a border out of some spare timber so I could put some sheeting and bark down. I've done about 30-40foot up to now covered it up and put some bark down, been today and weeded a bit more then go tomorrow and bark some more.

Sunflowers and bit and bobs.

Sunflowers are coming on and getting quite big but move around a bit much in the wind,I've strapped them up a little to stop them from falling down. Will learn to give them better support the next time I plant them, the bees seem to love the flowers and always have a few hanging around.

Ive been a couple of times to the allotment this week but not done a lot, only because I've taken juke the dog. He loves coming to the allotment but just sits on the path just looking around, the plot is fenced singe can't get out but he won't budge. I feel sorry for him just sitting down and not moving,so I end up giving up and walking him around the allotment site. He is a daddy's boy and always follows me around all over,so I think that's why he just sits down incase I disappear. Don't get me wrong I love taking him but would be better if he walk around the plot on his own,the plots big enough for him to wander around.

Pumpkins

I've growing some pumpkins this year to see what they are like, I've never tried them before so it's all new to me. I did want to grow them for the kids at Halloween this year, the pumpkins are the big type Hundredweight. I started them growing in the greenhouse, then replanted them before I planted outside. I did give some to keith on the plot next to me so he planted his so we can compare, as you can see in the picture his are a lot bigger than mine twice the size. I planted mine in the soil and Keith planted his in his compost / manure bin,so next year going to do the same and hope to get some large ones.

Still taking from greenhouse

Still taking few bits from the greenhouse and loving it, the greenhouse will soon be empty then I don't know what I'm going to do. Nothing going to waste with the veg from the greenhouse,I'm either making salads for my dinners or veg curry for tea. Once we eaten it all we will have to start to raid the freezer,I'm quite happy what I've grown in the greenhouse.

Onions

I've took up the rest of my onions this weekend and laid them flat to dry, the rest of the onions are in the shed drying out quite nice. I've took them up in three stages so i could use some straight away, also i don't spend all week Taking all the dead skin from the onions. The onions are half the size of what I go last year, but can't complain at least I have some onions to eat.

I must of spent on Sunday about 2 hours just removing all the dead skin and stalks from some of the onions, the ones cleaned up are still drying in the shed ready for storing or eaten.

Potatoes

I've took up my last row of Vanessa potatoes which are baking / Boiling ones,it wasn't a bad crop so will be buying them again next year. Once I'd dug them up I found a contrast in the sizes of the potato we had, some medium size and a few small ones.

Short visit

Only had a short visit to the allotment yesterday just to pick up a little veg, well just some potatoes ready for tea. The potatoes I picked up are still my firsts called Vanessa, mainly for baking or jackets but non really big enough for jackets. Still happy what I took home from about 4 tubers will try again next year to see if these grow any bigger, non of my spuds or next doors have grown very big this year so roll on next.

Found another sunflower that had shown its head do quite chuffed I have 2 flowers, the plants can grow to about 10 ft so quite tall plants will need ladders to take more shots. The beef toms are turning red and soon be ready for picking,my first one which is the biggest has a hole in the middle so will have keep an eye on it.

Beetroot

I made some beetroot tonight I used 3 beers and malt vinegar,I made 3 jars but 2 of them don't seem that good so need to get some more.

Today's little harvest.

Had a quick visit today just to pick up a little veg to get us through the next few days, well longer than a few days I hope none of it will go to waste. As I was leaving the allotment I noticed one of my sunflowers has started to flower, quite chuffed that one of them has flowered and not fallen down like its neighbour.

Beef tomatoes

Took a few cucumbers from the greenhouse but some of them look a bit pale, don't know if they need more sun or feed some of them are ok. One of them must if been nearly a foot and a half long,I put a £5 note along side the cucumber to see the size. I've done well on peppers and sweet peppers, think I will be growing them again next season.

I found my garlic which I planted last year and the stems had disappeared,I managed to dig up about 6 large bulbs I will use 5 and replant the other one later one. I've took up a few cabbages while these were young and the ones that had bolted, they do taste nice and I will soon be getting through them.

Not a lot done due to holiday.

Not done a lot last week and this week due to being on holiday in Scotland, so only thing I've done is been and picked some veg up over the last few days. Hoping to get back on track and get sorted on the allotment and updating the blog, well do my best to update always fall asleep when i get home.
